Cadets have the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities throughout the year. Below are some of the options 340 Griffin cadets participate in.
Note: It is important to know that you are not being recruited for the military by joining cadets. Air Cadets are not part of the Canadian Forces, even though there is a close relationship.
Gliding
Cadets are given the opportunity to go gliding, and experience taught concepts in real life. Gliding flights take place in two seat gliders owned by the Air Cadet League of Canada and operated by the Department of National Defense.
FTX
Field Training Exercises (FTX) are held1-2 times per year on select weekends and are designed to teach flight crew survival skills. Cadets learn to build shelters, map reading and compass navigation and more.
Ground School
Cadets who are 16 or older on Sept 1 can apply to the National Ground School Program, one step towards earning a glider or power pilot license.
Summer Training Camps
Open to cadets in their 2nd year of training, Summer Training is offered at Cadet Training Centers across Canada and ranges in length 2-7 weeks. Cadets can specialize in a variety of disciplines including aviation technology, marksmanship, survival, band and more.
Biathalon
Cadets compete against other squadrons as a team in this physical fitness (running) plus marksmanship event.
Range Shooting/Marksmanship
Using standard air rifles, this program component provides standards for instruction, an opportunity to compete, earn badges for accuracy and develop marksmanship skills.
Community Service & Citizenship
From supporting the Royal Canadian Legion with the annual poppy campaign and participating in Remembrance Day ceremonies, to earth week clean up events, Cadets give back to their community.
Leadership Opportunities
Cadets assume more responsibilities as they rise through the ranks, including assisting and mentoring those in lower years, taking on teaching roles, and helping the squadron run smoothly.
Annual Review
The Annual Ceremonial Review is an important event in the training year. Cadets receive rank promotions and participate in an award ceremony. It is an opportunity for cadets to showcase what they have learned over the training year to their families, friends and assembled guests.
Volunteer Hours
Need volunteer hours for high school credit? Represent the squadron at various community events (Pumpkinfest, Leisure Fair etc.) and get your hours wrapped up.
Sports Nights
Regular parade nights are replaced with scheduled sports nights to encourage physical fitness and teamwork. Sports night includes team games, bowling, road hockey, curling, hiking and more.
Public Speaking
Cadets have the opportunity to showcase their Effective Speaking skills and compete at the Squadron level, with one or two of the top speakers participating in the Regional Competition.
